November 22, 2018

Greetings to You!

It is once again time to begin planning for our 2019 Chaplain's Professional Development Institute and fellowship. Our 2019 meeting will convene in beautiful Baltimore, Maryland from June 17-21, 2019. Our theme is "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Its Impact on the Family System." Because of the myriad of problems surrounding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in our nation we need to be as educated and informed as possible to address any potential problems that may arise.

We have a great list of presenters for the week Chaplain (CPT) Janell Myhren, will present on PTSD and Its Impact on the Family System, Chaplain (CPT) Tammy Briggs, will present on PTSD, and Its Impact on Women, and Chaplain Timothy McGregor will present on Building Spiritual Strength: Providing Spiritual Care for PTSD/Moral Injury. Each presenter comes well qualified with a plethora of knowledge and experience which lends itself to an enlightening and educationally challenging week.

On Monday we will meet with all of the Civilian Service Chaplains with our new liaison, The Reverend Dr. Kendal Jones, to discuss plans for the development and presentation of a strategic plan for their specialized ministry. We will meet in the Douglas Room, 401 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21201 from 11:00 A.M until 1;00 P.M. The Reverend Dr. Cleveland Mason, is the dynamic Pastor and President of the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland.

On Wednesday, June 19th we will celebrate our 2nd annual luncheon and honor our distinguished and accomplished Chaplains for 2019. The honorees for 2019 are Chaplain (Col) William Green; Chaplain Green is the Senior Chaplain in The National Baptist Convention USA, lnc. We will also honor Chaplain (Col) Ret. Sherman Baker, VA Chaplain, Chaplain (LTC) Steven Dabbs is the Senior Air Force Chaplain in The National Baptist Convention USA, lnc., and Chaplain (LTC.) Willie Mashack is currently assigned to Arlington National Cemetery. The luncheon will be held at Ballroom IV; One West Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD beginning at noon. Our Guest Speaker for the luncheon will be The Reverend Dr. Benjamin L. Morrow, (LTC), RET. U.S. Army and current Presiding Elder of the Charlotte District of the Western North Carolina Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.

Who are Chaplains?

A chaplain is an ordained clergy member who provides religious services and support to people who are hospitalized, incarcerated, or unable to attend religious services because they are on military duty.  Chaplains minister in a variety of settings, including the military, parishes, hospitals, prisons, universities, and schools. Military chaplains may be assigned to ships or military bases, and they may even be deployed in war zones. Hospital chaplains serve patients and staff members, and they may also provide in-home religious services for patients who are recovering from illnesses or receiving hospice care. A chaplain's most important job is to provide religious services, spiritual guidance, and counseling to those in need. A chaplain may also give sermons to encourage spirituality and provide comfort.
